The main conference venue is at the Universidade dos Açores Campus in Ponta Delgada. Ponta Delgada is a city and municipality on São Miguel Island in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. The city proper has a population of 46,102 and the municipality has a population of 64,516 for a total area of 233.0 km². It serves as the seat of the executive government of the Azores Autonomous Region. The University of the Azores is a public institution of higher education dependent on the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. It was established in 1976 with the aim of promoting the sustained development of the archipelago of the Azores. The University of the Azores opened on 9th January 1976 in the aftermath of the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 and before the institutionalization of the Autonomous Region although under the denomination of University Institute of the Azores After only a quarter of a century of activity the University has grown according to the local development projection which is largely responsible for the transformation of the face of the islands It is our duty at the University of the Azores to promote the specific knowledge that establishes a link between the nature of the Institution and the character of the Region an imperative for the success of the academy and the community It is also our duty at the University of the Azores to promote universal knowledge in accordance with the declaration of Bologna. CIBIO-Pólo Açores is a research group integrated in CIBIO-Centre for Research in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, Oporto, under the acronym "BIOISLE" (www.cibio.up.pt). It includes 13 researchers from the University of the Azores, that has its headquarters in the Department of Biology. Area of research focuses on the evolutionary and ecological processes determining the patterns of biodiversity of island ecosystems, mainly in the Azores and other Macaronesian archipelagos, and also planning, management and conservation of the regional natural heritage.
